1966 Corvette

Here's the steps we took in painting a 66 Vette. The car was pretty nice before stripping without alot of obvious damage.

After stripping we saw that the the entire drivers side had new panels at one time. The passenger rear quarter was also repaired before. We reground the seams where the new panels were previously attached. A new fiberglass layup was placed in these seams. This was probably not needed but we just like to be sure. The passenger rear quarter needed alot more work as it had been repaired by a novice. A new layup was put over the entire area using a peel ply for better feathering. After the basic fiberglass work, we used short strand polyster filler for most of the shaping work. When we were satisfied the shape was correct we coated the entire car with Z-Chrome Rust Defender. This product is a talc filled sprayable polyseter. The product sands easy and fills incredibly well. Final shaping was accomplished using this product.

We switched to urethane primer using Valspar Sunfil 92 Series. The car was primed and blocked four times to be certain it was straight.

After finishing the car with 400 grit wet/dry, we cleaned and masked it again. This was in preperation for the final topcoat. The car was thouroughly cleaned again and tacked. We used Valspar 98N sealer as it lays nicely and can be made in practically any color.

An hour after sealing we started the basecoat application. In this case we used the 333 series basecoat in the original 1966 silver. Two coats were applied to cover.

After about 1/2 hour flash time we began our clear coats. Three medium wet coats of Valspar AC4400 were sprayed. AC4400 is a premium clearcoat which give a great gloss. After cut and buff the car was delivered to the owner for assembly.
